McLaren Bike Park

SF Urban Riders is working to bring a bicycle skills park to San Francisco. A location has been identified in McLaren Park and discussions are more than half-way to making this dream a reality.

Overview:

Through community outreach, SF Urban Riders has identified a need for this facility and a potential location in McLaren Park where a bicycle park can be created to benefit all users, regardless of age or ability.

The location we have identified is a decaying asphalt wasteland, and has been used for dumping trash and unwanted furniture, etc. The SF Urban Riders plan would remove the asphalt, mitigate the trash dumping and result in not only a recreational facility for the community, but create additional park land and picnic facilities.

SF Urban Riders is working with Alpine Bike Parks to ensure that this park will be professionally designed and constructed, and ultimately become a unique draw to visitors from the Bay Area and beyond.

Its design will contain elements appealing to families with children just getting comfortable on two wheels, young adults seeking the thrills of a jump park or wanting to improve their technical skills and anyone that wants to experience the joy of riding a bicycle in an off road environment. It will feature beginner to advanced level bike features such as flowing trails, berms, progressive table top jumps, dirt jumpswooden ladders, wall rides, a pump track, and much more.

Funding Goals:

Estimated cost for the Mclaren Bike Park is $1.25m – $1.5m

SF Urban Riders has funded the outreach, and Conceptual Design process through small grants and donations ($20,00).

In January 2013 SFUR was awarded a SFRPD Community Opportunity Fund grant to fund Phase One Construction costs ($250,000).

In July 2013 SF Recreation & Parks Department was awarded a matching grant from the Land & Water Conservation Fund to fund Phase Two Construction costs ($250,000).

SFUR and SFRPD are actively seeking funding opportunities for future Phase implementation.
